Dust motes danced in the meager light filtering through the narrow, slit windows, illuminating the grim faces of the few remaining generals. Lord Valerius, his regal bearing fractured by the recent humiliation, paced the scarred stone floor, his heavy boots echoing the tempest in his soul. The defeat at Oakhaven was not merely a loss of men and resources; it was a stinging indictment of his prowess, a public unraveling of the carefully constructed image of invincibility he had so painstakingly crafted.

“They defied us,” he spat, the words like venom. “A village of farmers and artisans, aided by… beasts.” The word was laced with a disgust that went beyond mere disdain for creatures of magic. It was a deep-seated revulsion, a primal fear that clawed at the edges of his reason. “And a girl. A mere girl, no older than my youngest squires, turned our legions into a rout.”

General Kaelen, his face a roadmap of old battles, bowed his head. “My Lord, the Draggifs are more formidable than we anticipated. Their aerial superiority, combined with the terrain… and the girl, Elara, she seemed to anticipate our every move.”
