Chapter 9
An Unlikely Alliance
Arthur proves his worth to Kael and the rebels, perhaps by defending them or showing his growing power. An alliance is forged, united by their common enemy.
The air in the hidden valley hung thick with the scent of damp earth and the metallic tang of fear. Arthur, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs, watched as Kael and his rebels, a ragged collection of men and women with eyes that held the hardened glint of survivors, circled them cautiously. They were a stark contrast to the polished, armored soldiers Arthur had sometimes glimpsed in the distance, their clothing patched and worn, their weapons fashioned from scavenged metal and sharpened bone. Yet, there was a fierce, undeniable spirit in their bearing, a flicker of defiance that spoke of a long and bitter struggle.
"You claim to have powers," Kael’s voice was a low growl, laced with the deep suspicion that had earned him his leadership among these outcasts. Arthur swallowed, the dryness in his throat a testament to his nervousness. He had expected skepticism, but the sheer intensity of Kael's distrust was a cold weight in his stomach. He had come here hoping for allies, not for another battle of wills. "I don't expect you to trust me blindly, Kael," Arthur said, his voice steady despite the tremor he felt within. He met Kael’s sharp gaze directly. "But I have seen the dragons’ cruelty. I have felt their power. And I have discovered that I can fight back."
