Some forty years ago, I had the opportunity to have as many friends over as I'd like while my parents were at work. I was told that the house was now mine. My siblings, nine years older than me, were all gone. A 3-1/2-bedroom home with two bathrooms and a decked-out basement with a barn that I called Pete's Pub. Pete's Pub also had a large freezer that I easily put quarter barrels in if needed, depending upon the amount of people that came over. It was like running a speakeasy, except there was no famous knock and there was no one not accepted. Everybody could come in as long as you were either a jock, a freak, or just a walking nomad. As long as you had a buck to suck, you were in this party, but this party wasn't for pussies either. It had shots. We were going to do whisky. We were going to do tequila. We even did a day of vodka. It's morning, for God's sake! Make mamasas. Though my friends and I were not into pussy drinks, we went for the gusto, probably whisky and water for the most. Back then, wines were still big: country quencher, Boon's Farm, strawberry hill, things like that. It was amazing at 14% alcohol, and drinking like it's a beer, you get very trashed. You start talking about shit that isn't there. You start to do shit that's not there. You march up big hills by yourself and sit down and what the hell is going on? It's a good time. Have the normies check on you once in a while, just in case you forgot to put your cataract on or you're laying in frozen or whatever your issue may be. Take care. God bless! One of my neighbors is out for me, saying I wasn't home to fight with her. I guess the word that came down is these are the same people, mind you, that flooded our apartment there in 303 or in 203. Our apartment happens to be on the first floor. You go in the basement for 101 and 102. That's either here or there at the moment, because here we are. This is where I got to. I'm pretty much a washed-up wrestler. I got my ass kicked by the guy who ran the meeting prior to this, Mike Canodo. I'm sure he's going to teach another rough crowd to do more of that, because that's what he's about, and that's what I respect about him. He keeps doing the next right thing, allowing himself to make mistakes. You
Chapters
- 1The Basement Bar's Golden GlowThe house, a suburban sanctuary, belonged to a fourteen-year-old Peter. His older siblings were long gone, leaving him with a sprawling home and a legendary basement dubbed 'Pete's Pub.' This wasn't just a basement; it was a speakeasy for the soul, a haven for jocks, freaks, and nomads alike. As long as you had a dollar and a thirst for adventure, the doors were open. The air thrummed with the promise of cheap thrills and potent spirits – whisky, tequila, even a vodka-fueled morning. This was the era of unadulterated freedom, where the potent 14% Boon's Farm and Strawberry Hill wines blurred the lines of reality, leading to solitary, introspective climbs up hills and a blissful detachment from the mundane. The scene is set with the vibrant, almost hallucinatory haze of youth, a time of boundless energy and questionable decisions, all under the watchful, if sometimes absent, eyes of parental figures.
- 2Scars of the MatThe vibrant recollections of Pete's Pub stand in stark contrast to the narrator's current reality. He's no longer the king of his domain, but a 'washed-up wrestler' nursing the sting of a recent defeat. The man who handed him that loss, Mike Canodo, is more than just an opponent; he's a figure of profound respect. Canodo embodies a hard-won resilience, a man who has faced his own battles and learned from every fall. The narrator admires Canodo's ability to 'keep doing the next right thing,' a philosophy born from acknowledging imperfections and embracing mistakes as stepping stones. This chapter delves into the raw vulnerability of defeat, the ache of a bruised ego, and the dawning realization that true strength lies not in winning every fight, but in the grace and wisdom with which one handles loss. The wrestling ring, once a stage for dominance, now serves as a stark reminder of present-day limitations.
- 3The Neighbor's GrudgeThe echoes of Pete's Pub and the sting of the wrestling ring are suddenly amplified by a confrontation with a neighbor. This isn't a new dispute; it's a festering wound from the past. The neighbor, a woman with a long memory and a sharp tongue, confronts the narrator, accusing him of being absent when she needed him. This accusation seems to be a veiled reference to older grievances, specifically mentioning flooded apartments – a past incident that clearly left a sour taste. The narrator finds himself entangled in a web of unresolved neighborhood tensions, a reminder that past actions, even those from decades ago, can cast long shadows. This chapter explores the frustrating reality of lingering grudges, the difficulty in escaping old conflicts, and the way petty disputes can escalate, forcing the narrator to confront the present-day repercussions of history.
- 4Washed in the WineThe heady days of Pete's Pub, fueled by sugary wines and potent spirits, are revisited through a haze of fragmented memories. The narrator recalls nights where the world warped and shifted, where solitary walks under the moonlight led to profound, if chemically induced, epiphanies. He remembers the intoxicating feeling of being detached from reality, of believing he could conquer any hill, of conversing with phantoms. These memories, once cherished as symbols of freedom, now carry a different weight. They serve as a stark reminder of the blurred lines between youthful exuberance and dangerous delusion. This chapter explores the unreliable nature of memory, the intoxicating allure of altered states, and the unsettling realization of how easily perception can be twisted by the pursuit of escape. The carefree spirit of youth is now tinged with the somber understanding of its potential consequences.
- 5When the Music FadesThe vibrant energy of Pete's Pub, a sanctuary of uninhibited joy, feels like a distant dream. The narrator now stands in the harsh light of adulthood, where the carefree abandon of youth has been replaced by the weight of current struggles. The contrast is stark: the endless summer days of parties and potent drinks versus the sobering reality of a washed-up wrestling career and unresolved neighborhood disputes. He yearns for the simplicity of those bygone days, the easy camaraderie and the thrill of the unknown. Yet, he also recognizes the irretrievability of that time. This chapter is a poignant reflection on nostalgia, the bittersweet ache for a lost era, and the difficult process of reconciling idealized memories with the often-unforgiving realities of the present. The joy of the past serves to highlight the challenges of today.
- 6The Path ForwardThe wisdom of Mike Canodo, the wrestler who defeated him, begins to resonate deeply. Canodo's philosophy of embracing mistakes and consistently striving to 'do the next right thing' offers a beacon of hope. Inspired by this resilience, the narrator embarks on a journey of self-reflection and personal growth. He acknowledges the excess of his youth, the blurred lines of his memories, and the unresolved conflicts of his present. This chapter marks a turning point, a conscious decision to move beyond regret and towards acceptance. The focus shifts from lamenting the past to actively shaping the future, armed with a newfound understanding of perseverance and the courage to confront his challenges head-on. The porcelain throne, once a symbol of a youthful escape, now represents a place of quiet contemplation and the resolve to build a better tomorrow.
