The Eiffel Tower, a skeletal titan against the bruised sky, loomed in the distance, a constant reminder of my own ephemeral presence here. Her frustration with her father, Silas, had been a stark counterpoint to my own romantic notions of rebellion. She’d spoken of abandonment, of missed birthdays and broken promises, while I’d been lost in the allure of his off-the-grid existence, his defiant rejection of the very world that had consumed me.
