The Parisian night pressed in, a velvet shroud studded with the indifferent glitter of a thousand windows. I sat on my usual bench, the one that offered a sliver of the Eiffel Tower between the skeletal arms of plane trees, and scrolled. The blue light of my phone painted my face in stark, artificial hues, a stark contrast to the soft glow of the city around me. Each tap, each swipe, was a tiny, desperate gasp for air in a world that demanded constant performance. Likes. Comments. Shares. They were the currency of my existence, the ephemeral validation that kept the gnawing emptiness at bay, at least for a little while.

I’d just finished a commission, a slick website design for a boutique hotel that wouldn’t even know my name if I passed them on the street. I’d poured hours into it, meticulously crafting every pixel, every shade of grey, every font choice. And now, it was live. The client was pleased, or so the curt email suggested. But the thrill, the fleeting surge of accomplishment, evaporated as quickly as it had arrived. What remained was the anxious flutter in my chest, the silent question: had it been *enough*? Would it translate into more followers? More inquiries? More… *me*?

My thumb hovered over the Instagram icon, a familiar itch. I’d posted a carefully curated shot of my workspace earlier, a staged tableau of artisanal coffee cups and scattered sketches, all bathed in that golden Parisian light that I’d learned to manipulate with filters. It had garnered a respectable number of likes, a few flattering comments about my ‘aesthetic.’ But even as I’d posted it, a hollowness had echoed within me. It was a lie, a polished veneer over the messy, uncertain reality of my life. The sketches were half-finished, the coffee had gone cold, and the ‘golden light’ was a carefully positioned lamp.
