The air in the café buzzed with the clatter of ceramic cups and the murmur of French conversations, a symphony Elara usually found soothing. But today, it grated. Chloe, across from her, stirred her *café crème* with unnecessary vigor, each swirl of the spoon a tiny tempest in the milky surface. The faint scent of roasted coffee beans did little to mask the tension that had settled between them like a fine Parisian dust.

“You’re looking at him through rose-tinted glasses, Elara,” Chloe said, her voice low, almost a growl. She gestured vaguely with her spoon, a gesture that encompassed Elara’s entire fascination with Silas.

Elara bristled, her fingers tightening around her own cup. “I’m looking at him as someone who’s found a way to live differently. Someone who isn't… drowning in all of this.” She swept her gaze around the bustling bistro, encompassing the sleek laptops, the glowing phone screens, the hurried glances. “He’s real, Chloe. He’s *present*.”
