The air in Silas’s studio was thick with the scent of linseed oil and something wild, something like damp earth after a summer rain. It clung to the rough-hewn beams overhead, to the discarded scraps of canvas that littered the floor like fallen leaves, and to me, wrapping around me like a forgotten shawl. He was a statue carved from shadow and concentration, his movements economical, deliberate. He held a palette knife, not scraping or slashing, but coaxing color from the tube, blending it with a fluid grace that belied his rough hands. The sounds he made were soft: the gentle scrape of the knife, the rustle of his worn linen shirt, the almost inaudible sigh that escaped his lips.
