Isabelle confronts Mr. Abernathy with fragments of her findings. He reveals his true motive: to claim the fortune for himself and keep Isabelle under his control, using her ignorance.

The heavy oak door of Mr. Abernathy’s study swung shut with a soft thud, the sound echoing the tremor in my own hands. The air inside was thick with the scent of aged paper and polished mahogany, a familiar perfume that had always conjured an illusion of comfort. Tonight, however, it felt cloying, suffocating. I clutched the worn leather-bound journal to my chest, its pages a jumble of cryptic entries and smudged ink, a testament to a life I was only beginning to glimpse. Mr. Abernathy sat behind his imposing desk, his face a mask of genial concern, the lamplight glinting off his spectacles as he regarded me.

“Isabelle, my dear,” he began, his voice a smooth balm, “you look troubled. Is everything quite alright?”

My heart hammered against my ribs. For weeks, I had navigated the labyrinth of Mr. Abernathy’s kindness, accepting his patronage, his reassurances, his carefully curated world. But the journal, unearthed from a forgotten corner of the attic, had begun to unravel the threads of his carefully constructed facade. It spoke of hushed meetings, of a desperate pact, of a fortune hidden not just from the world, but from a child. And it spoke, in veiled terms, of a guardian who was more than he seemed.
