The dusty sunlight slanted through the tall, arched windows of the library, painting stripes of gold across the worn leather and the polished mahogany. I traced the raised lettering on the spine of a particularly ancient tome, the scent of aged paper and binding glue a familiar comfort. It was in these quiet hours, surrounded by stories bound and unread, that I felt most myself. The locket, nestled beneath my simple dress, was a constant, cool weight against my skin, a silent question I carried everywhere.
The library door creaked open, a sound that usually went unnoticed in the grand house. My head lifted, a flicker of annoyance at the interruption. Mr. Abernathy was away, and I had the place to myself. But the figure that stood silhouetted against the afternoon light was not Mr. Abernathy. It was a woman, tall and slender, draped in a shawl the color of twilight. Her face was a study in elegant lines, framed by silver hair pulled back into a severe bun. Her eyes, when they met mine, were the startling blue of a winter sky, and they held a depth that seemed to absorb the very light around them.
“May I intrude?” Her voice was like the rustle of dry leaves, soft yet carrying a certain resonance.
