The polished silver of the locket, now dulled with the patina of age and the oils from my own anxious fingers, felt heavier with each passing day. It was more than just a trinket; it was a whisper of a life I couldn't recall, a life that felt impossibly distant, yet tantalizingly within reach. My days at the orphanage had been a monotonous cycle of chores and hushed meals, a grey existence punctuated only by the dull ache of not knowing. But the locket, with its intricate scrollwork and the faint, ghost-like impression of a crest I couldn't quite decipher, had ignited a spark, a burning curiosity that refused to be extinguished.

Mr. Abernathy, bless his seemingly kind heart, had welcomed me into his grand, albeit somewhat somber, estate with an effusive warmth that had initially felt like a sunbeam breaking through a perpetual cloud. He spoke of my parents with a reverence that bordered on adoration, painting them as paragons of virtue and generosity, a stark contrast to the vague, unsettling memories that sometimes surfaced in my dreams – shadows and sharp, panicked cries. He provided me with a comfortable room, elegant dresses, and tutors who patiently guided me through the subjects that had been beyond the orphanage’s meager resources. Yet, beneath the veneer of his benevolent guardianship, a subtle unease began to creep into my thoughts, a quiet dissonance that I couldn’t quite articulate.

It started with the questions. Small, innocent inquiries at first, posed during our shared dinners in the cavernous dining hall, the clinking of silverware echoing in the silence. "Mr. Abernathy," I'd begun one evening, tracing the rim of my wine glass, "you mentioned my mother was fond of music. Did she play an instrument?"
