Chapter 8
Paradoxical Pursuers
Entities created by the Weavers hunt Elara. She uses her nascent chronomancy and the Lattice's guidance to evade them, learning to bend time.
The air crackled with an unnatural stillness, a silence that pressed in on Elara’s ears like a physical weight. It was the kind of quiet that preceded a storm, or perhaps something far more unsettling. The alleyway, usually a symphony of scraping boots and distant hawkers, was now a tomb. She clutched the Obsidian Lattice tighter, its cool surface a familiar comfort against her trembling palm. It pulsed, a slow, steady beat against her skin, a silent reassurance in the suffocating hush.
Then, a sound. A skittering, like dry leaves blown by a phantom wind, but sharper, more deliberate. Elara spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. Two figures coalesced from the deepening shadows at the alley's mouth. They weren't solid, not entirely. Their forms wavered, shimmering like heat haze on a summer road, yet their eyes, two pinpricks of malevolent amber, were unnervingly clear. They were creatures born of fragmented moments, of temporal distortions – the paradoxes the Weavers of Fate had woven into the fabric of this city.
“They’ve found me,” Elara whispered, her voice barely audible. The Lattice pulsed a little faster, as if sensing her fear. Evade, a thought, not her own, brushed against her mind. Bend. Flow.
