Chapter 12
Shards of Tomorrow
The Weavers attempt to seize the Lattice by creating a devastating future event. Elara must race against time to prevent it.
The air in Elara’s cramped workshop thrummed with an unnatural stillness, a pregnant silence that pressed in on her eardrums. Dust motes, usually dancing in the single shaft of light piercing the gloom, hung suspended, as if time itself had momentarily faltered. The Obsidian Lattice, cradled in her trembling hands, pulsed with a frantic, erratic beat, its internal light flaring like a dying star. It was a desperate rhythm, a siren song of impending doom.

It was a feeling, a premonition of a future so bleak it threatened to unravel the very fabric of her present. Images, sharp and terrifying, flashed behind her eyes: colossal, obsidian towers scraping a bruised, alien sky, rivers of molten metal flowing through choked city streets, and the chilling echo of screams that were not human.
A tremor ran through the Lattice, and the workshop around her flickered. For a fleeting instant, the familiar, grimy walls dissolved, replaced by a vista of utter devastation. The sky was a sickly green, choked with ash, and the ground beneath her feet cracked and groaned, spewing forth a noxious, metallic odor. Then, just as suddenly, the vision snapped back, leaving Elara gasping for breath, the Lattice still throbbing in her grasp.
