The Lattice pulsed faintly against her skin, a cool, reassuring weight beneath her tunic. It was her guide, her burden, and now, her only hope of finding answers. The Weavers of Fate, as the Lattice had chillingly revealed, were not content with merely observing the threads of destiny; they sought to unravel them, to reweave them to their own sinister design. And their gaze, she suspected, was already sweeping across the city, searching for the anomaly that was her.

She navigated the throng, her eyes scanning the stalls. A vendor with eyes like polished obsidian offered bottled laughter from a child’s first birthday. Another, his face a tapestry of wrinkles that seemed to shift and rearrange themselves, sold the scent of rain on a summer’s day, captured in delicate glass vials. Elara’s stomach grumbled, a mundane reminder of her physical needs in this realm of temporal treasures. But hunger was a small price to pay for the knowledge she desperately sought.
