Chapter 8
Echoes of the Damned
The air in the refectory hung heavy, thick with the scent of old stone and something else, something Elara couldn't quite place – a faint, sweet decay that prickled her nose. Sunlight, struggling through the high, arched windows, painted dusty stripes across the long, bare wooden tables. It was here, in the hushed quiet that followed the midday meal, that Elara felt the weight of her confinement most acutely. The Sisters, their faces hidden behind those unnerving white masks, moved with a silent, unsettling grace, their black habits swirling like shadows.
She watched them, her heart a small, frightened bird fluttering against her ribs. Every rustle of fabric, every soft footfall, seemed to echo the unsettling words she’d overheard, whispers of a coming ceremony, of a vessel, of a power that needed to be appeased. The Mother Superior’s pronouncements, delivered in a voice like dry leaves skittering across a stone floor, still rang in her ears. “The time is nigh. The Perpetual Sorrow demands its due. Innocence must be offered, and the ancient one will bless us anew.”
Elara shivered, despite the warmth of the sunbeam. She remembered her own arrival, a lost girl stumbling upon this place of stark beauty and chilling secrets. She had been so afraid, so alone, until Sister Agnes had found her. The older nun, her mask a little less severe than the others, had offered a small, almost imperceptible nod, a silent acknowledgment that spoke volumes. Sister Agnes, with her gentle hands and eyes that sometimes held a flicker of something akin to sadness, was the only warmth in this cold sanctuary.
