The Ritual of Shadows

The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something Elara couldn't quite place – a faint, metallic tang that prickled her nose. It was night, and the only light came from a single, sputtering candle that cast dancing shadows on the stone walls. She sat on a straw-filled pallet, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Sister Agnes had brought her here, to this small, windowless room, with a hushed urgency that had both frightened and intrigued Elara.

"You must be brave, child," Sister Agnes had whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustle of her habit. "Tonight is the night."

Elara swallowed, her throat dry. She had seen enough of the Sisters of Perpetual Sorrow to know that "tonight" was not a time for bravery, but for fear. The masked figures, their faces hidden behind stark white planes, moved with a chilling uniformity, their whispers like the dry rustling of leaves. She had tried to understand them, to find the kindness she knew must exist somewhere within their austere order, but their silence and their veiled glances had always pushed her away. Except for Sister Agnes. Agnes, with her gentle eyes that sometimes peeked from behind the mask, and her hands that moved with a hesitant grace when she tended to Elara.
