Chapter 4
The Serpent's Coil
The air in the convent was thick, not just with the scent of old stone and beeswax, but with a peculiar stillness, like the held breath before a storm. Elara, her heart a fluttery bird against her ribs, traced the rough stone walls of her small cell. It wasn't a prison, not exactly, but the heavy wooden door, always ajar but never truly open, felt like one. The sisters, with their rustling black habits and their unnerving white masks that hid all but their eyes, moved through the cloisters like shadows, their footsteps hushed, their voices low murmurs that never quite formed discernible words.

Sister Beatrice, whose mask seemed permanently fixed in a stern, disapproving line. And Mother Superior, whose presence was a weight, a palpable force that commanded silence and obedience.
The ceremony. The word echoed in Elara’s mind, a dark, insistent hum. She’d overheard snatches of hushed conversations, seen the extra candles being polished, the ancient altar cloth being carefully unfurled. They spoke of the ‘Great Unveiling,’ of ‘acceptance,’ and of the ‘vessel.’ And each time, their masked gazes seemed to settle upon her, making her skin prickle with a fear she couldn’t quite name.
