Chapter 13
Silas's Gambit
Silas orchestrates a small gathering, subtly encouraging others to explore their own muted feelings. He uses Elara's neon top as a focal point, a symbol of what has been lost and what could be regained.
The air in the village square, usually a still, unbreathing thing, seemed to stir with a nervous energy. It was the hour when the sun, a pale disc behind a perpetual veil of grey, began its slow descent, casting long, mournful shadows across the cobblestones. Elara, the neon-green top a secret beacon beneath her drab shawl, felt a familiar tremor of apprehension, but it was now laced with something else, a sharp, bright curiosity. She’d been asked, by a note tucked into her usual ration of grey bread, to attend a small gathering by the old well. The note, written in a spidery, unfamiliar script, bore no name, only a single, looping symbol that Elara somehow knew belonged to Silas.

Then she saw him – Silas. He sat on the lip of the well, his dark cloak blending with the deepening twilight, a single, unknitted ball of yarn resting in his palm. It was a startling shade, a deep, velvety indigo, unlike any color she had ever seen woven into the village’s fabric.
He looked up as Elara approached, his eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, held a gentle knowing. He didn’t smile, not in the way the villagers understood smiles, but a subtle warmth radiated from him, a quiet invitation. He gestured to a space beside him.
