Elara shares her secret with Kael, showing him the subtle changes in her knitting. He is torn between his ingrained obedience and the undeniable allure of the vibrant emotions Elara embodies.
The afternoon sun, a pale, washed-out disc behind a perpetual haze, cast long, languid shadows across the village square. Elara found Kael by the old well, his hands calloused from tending the muted grey crops, his eyes the same shade of cloudy sky as everyone else’s. He was mending a worn tunic, the stitches a careful, familiar grey on grey. A knot of apprehension tightened in Elara’s chest, a tiny, unfamiliar pulse of something akin to fear, but also a fierce, burgeoning courage. She clutched the hem of her own simple grey dress, the fabric rough against her fingertips.
“Kael,” she began, her voice barely a whisper, afraid of shattering the quietude that clung to them like dust.
He looked up, his brow furrowed slightly. “Elara. What is it?” His tone was even, uninflected, the way all tones were in their village.
