The bell above the door of "The Last Page" chimed, a familiar, gentle sound that usually heralded the arrival of Mrs. Gable for her weekly dose of historical fiction, or young Timmy, clutching a crumpled five-dollar bill for the latest graphic novel. Today, however, the scent of old paper and lemon polish was momentarily disturbed by a sharper, more metallic tang on the air, the ghost of something Elara had wrestled with just hours before. She straightened from behind the counter, her heart giving a nervous little flutter that had nothing to do with Mrs. Gable’s impending arrival.

It was him. The Mysterious Customer. He stood framed in the doorway, a silhouette against the pale afternoon light, the usual faint smile playing on his lips. He wore a dark, tailored coat that seemed to absorb the light, and his eyes, when they met hers, held a disconcerting intensity. He was a regular, yet never quite felt like one. He’d browse for hours, his fingers tracing the spines of books with a reverence that suggested genuine appreciation, but his questions were rarely about the authors or the plots. They were more… observational. About the rhythms of the shop, the patrons, and, lately, about *her*.

"Good afternoon, Elara," he said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated pleasantly in the quiet space. He didn't offer his name, and she, in turn, never pressed. It felt like a silent agreement, a dance of veiled identities.
