Beneath the Surface
The scent of old paper and brewing chamomile tea was Elara’s world, a comforting balm against the gnawing unease that often settled in her chest. Sunlight, filtered through the dusty panes of “The Last Page,” painted shifting patterns on the worn spines of books. She traced the delicate, almost imperceptible moth-like embroidery on the cuff of her simple cardigan, a private symbol that whispered of a life lived far from these quiet shelves. Her grandmother, a fragile porcelain doll propped against a mountain of pillows in the small apartment above the shop, was her constant anchor, her gentle cough a soft percussion to Elara’s days.
“Another cup, dear?” Grandmother’s voice was a papery rustle.
“Of course, Nana.” Elara’s smile was practiced, warm, and entirely for her grandmother’s benefit. She measured out the dried herbs, the familiar ritual a steadying presence. But beneath the placid surface, a different rhythm pulsed. The memory of sweat stinging her eyes, the thud of leather on leather, the roar of a crowd that knew her only as ‘Moth’ – it was a fever that never quite broke.
