Chapter 4
First Contact
A creature, born from the news report, appears near the watchtower. Its triangular face and predatory stance send a jolt of terror through the family, confirming their worst fears.
The flickering light of the television cast long, dancing shadows across the cramped interior of the watchtower. Outside, the snow continued its relentless descent, muffling the world into a hushed, white oblivion. Paul, his face etched with a weariness that seemed to have settled into his very bones, watched the screen with a grim intensity. Beside him, Lilly, her young face pale, huddled closer to her father, her eyes wide and unblinking. The reporter’s voice, though tinny and distorted, carried an unnerving calm as she detailed the latest horrors. “Reports continue to flood in from across the globe,” she stated, her words a stark contrast to the visceral scenes playing out behind her. A close-up shot filled the screen: a creature, undeniably monstrous, its head a sharp, geometric triangle, was caught in mid-pounce. Its four spindly legs, tipped with razor-sharp claws, propelled it forward with terrifying speed. The camera zoomed in on the creature’s chest, a horrifying display of what looked like a gaping maw, before it crawled into its victim, consuming them from the inside out, bending their will to its own.
Paul squeezed Lilly’s shoulder, a silent gesture of reassurance that did little to quell the tremor in his own hand. He’d seen enough. He’d seen the subtle shifts in the local wildlife, the unnerving silence that had fallen over the woods, the strange, vibrant flora that had begun to bloom in impossible shades of red and pink, even in the biting cold. But this… this was concrete. This was the world bleeding into their isolated sanctuary.
