The immediate threat recedes. The vines begin to wither, and the child-creatures show signs of receding. The family emerges, forever changed, facing an uncertain, but hopeful, new dawn.
The silence that descended was not the gentle hush of snowfall, but the stunned quiet after a tempest. The roars had faded, the frantic scrabbling ceased, and the unnerving, guttural chitters that had punctuated the night were gone. Paul, his knuckles white where he gripped the worn rifle, scanned the snow-laden landscape through the reinforced glass of the watchtower. The vibrant, terrifying spectacle of the night had receded, leaving behind a stark, monochrome canvas.
Lilly, her face pale and etched with exhaustion, leaned against the cold metal of the tower wall. Her eyes, usually bright with youthful curiosity, were shadowed, holding a depth of fear that hadn’t been there before. Beside her, Kevin, his small frame trembling almost imperceptibly, clutched a tattered stuffed bear, its button eye seeming to stare blankly into the gray morning. Their breath plumed in the frigid air, visible ghosts in the room that had been their sanctuary, and then their cage.
“It’s… quiet,” Kevin whispered, his voice a thin thread of sound.
