Chapter 15
Echoes of the Past
Paul reveals a fragment of a forgotten family story, a tale of strange lights and a pact made long ago, hinting at a connection to the Molly Queenie.
The flickering television screen cast a pale, spectral glow across the faces of Paul, Lilly, and Kevin. Outside the reinforced glass of the watchtower, the snow continued its silent, relentless descent, muffling the world and deepening the isolation. The news anchor’s voice, tinny and strained, was a disembodied phantom in the room, detailing the latest horrors. Images flashed across the screen – the grotesque, triangular faces of the creatures, their four-legged gait unnervingly fluid, their sharp limbs poised to strike. The report spoke of the vines, a vibrant, terrifying tapestry of red and pink that now seemed to blanket the very landscape they inhabited.
Paul’s jaw was set, a familiar mask of stoic resolve. He’d seen enough of these broadcasts to know that the official pronouncements offered little comfort, only a chilling confirmation of their deepening nightmare. Lilly, her seventeen years etched with a premature weariness, leaned forward, her eyes wide and unblinking, absorbing every gruesome detail. Beside her, Kevin, fifteen and perpetually on the edge of fear, huddled deeper into his worn blanket, his gaze fixed on the floor as if to shield himself from the monstrous truths unfolding on the screen.
“They say it’s spreading,” the anchor’s voice crackled, a desperate plea woven into the report. “The vines. Everywhere. And the… the children. They’re not fully gone, but they’re not themselves. They hunger.” The camera zoomed in on a close-up of a vine, its tendrils pulsing with an unnatural luminescence, a disturbing blend of scarlet and rose that seemed to writhe even in the static image. Then, another shot of one of the creatures, its sharp claws extended, a chilling testament to its predatory nature. The report concluded with a stark warning: “Avoid contact with the vines at all costs. And if you see any sign of… unusual behavior in children, report it immediately. The authorities are overwhelmed.”
