The Forest Path
Their escape begins. The forest, usually familiar, now seems alien and hostile, twisted by the pervasive red and pink vines that seem to watch their every move.
The world outside the watchtower’s reinforced glass had always been a tapestry of muted whites and grays, a predictable, serene canvas of snow and sky. But the broadcast had painted it with shades of terror, a lurid hue that now seemed to seep into the very air they breathed. Paul, his jaw set like stone, finally broke the suffocating silence. "We can't stay here. Not anymore."
Lilly, her knuckles white where she gripped the armrest of her chair, nodded, her gaze still fixed on the flickering television screen where the reporter’s voice had been replaced by a static hiss. The images of the creatures – the triangular faces, the unnerving gait, the swift, brutal efficiency of their feeding – were seared behind her eyelids. Kevin, his small frame hunched beside her, let out a shaky breath, his eyes wide and unfocused. He clutched a worn, plush wolf, its button eyes staring blankly ahead.
"Where do we go, Dad?" Lilly’s voice was a low hum, barely audible above the wind’s mournful song outside.
