The air in the village square hung thick, a palpable tension that seemed to stifle the very scent of blooming jasmine. Amani stood at the forefront, the amulet a warm, humming weight in her palm, its ethereal glow a stark contrast to the encroaching twilight. Around her, the villagers formed a protective semi-circle, their faces a tapestry of fear and burgeoning courage. Mihail was a solid presence at her side, his dark hair whipped by the wind, his blue eyes, usually so sharp and focused, now held a glint of worry as they scanned the shadows at the edge of the square.
“You can do this, Amani,” Mihail’s voice was a low rumble, a steady anchor in the rising tide of her anxiety. “Trust in what you’ve learned. Trust in yourself.”
But doubt, a venomous serpent, coiled in Amani’s gut. She stole a glance at Vladislaus. He was a figure carved from shadow and malice, his arrogant smirk a cruel mockery of their desperate stand. His dark forces, a silent, menacing tide, pressed in from all sides. “You think you can protect them, little girl?” Vladislaus taunted, his voice a silken rasp that scraped against Amani’s nerves. “You, a mere girl with a trinket?”
