Chapter 17
Gabriel's Redemption?
Gabriel, filled with remorse, seeks to atone. He finds a hidden message from Amani, guiding him toward a path of redemption.
Gabriel stumbled through the darkened woods, the weight of his betrayal a physical ache in his chest. The screams of his people, the chilling laughter of Vladislaus, and Amani’s anguished cry – they echoed in the silence, each sound a fresh stab of regret. He had chosen fear, chosen the perceived safety of submission, and in doing so, had nearly destroyed everything he held dear. He had seen Amani fall, seen the light drain from her eyes as Vladislaus’s fangs sank into her flesh, and in that moment, the last vestiges of his misguided fear had been consumed by an all-consuming grief.
He had been a fool. A coward. He had allowed Vladislaus’s venomous whispers, his promises of power and protection, to poison his mind, twisting his loyalty into a weapon against the very people he swore to defend. He had seen Amani’s power, felt its raw, untamed energy, and a selfish envy had taken root. He had believed, in his foolishness, that he could bargain with the darkness, that he could save himself and perhaps even his village by appeasing the vampire lord. Instead, he had become a pawn, a tool for destruction.
He reached the edge of the village, the once vibrant square now a scene of devastation. Fires still smoldered, casting flickering shadows on the ruined buildings. The air was thick with the stench of smoke and death. He saw Mihail kneeling beside Amani’s still form, his grief palpable even from a distance. The amulet lay beside her, its light extinguished, its power seemingly spent. Gabriel’s stomach churned. He had failed her. He had failed them all.
