The city, even in its tired, late-night hum, felt like a vast, breathing organism. Streetlights, like weary eyes, cast long, distorted shadows that danced with the passing headlights. I walked these streets not with a destination in mind, but with a kind of restless purpose, a feeling that I was meant to be here, among the forgotten corners and the faces that rarely graced the daylight. It was on one of these wanderings that I found myself drawn to the warm glow spilling from a small, unassuming diner. Not the kind with chrome and neon, but the sort with chipped Formica tables and the comforting scent of frying onions clinging to the air like a friendly ghost.

Inside, the late-night regulars were a study in quiet resilience. A woman, her face etched with a thousand stories, nursed a lukewarm coffee, her gaze fixed on some distant point beyond the condensation on the window. A young man, his shoulders slumped as if carrying an invisible weight, picked at a plate of eggs, his eyes downcast. They were the echoes of my own past, the reflections I’d tried so hard to outrun, and yet, here they were, as familiar as my own heartbeat.

I slid into a booth near the back, the worn vinyl sighing beneath me. The waitress, a woman named Loretta with hair the color of spun moonlight and a smile that had seen better days but lost none of its warmth, ambled over. “What can I get for you, hon?” she asked, her voice a low, gravelly rumble.
