Chapter 8
Forging the Path
The practical application of faith and calling. This involves navigating the challenges of living a purposeful life, making amends, and actively seeking opportunities to serve.
The dust devils danced on the cracked pavement, little whirlwinds of forgotten dreams and stray leaves. I watched them from the porch, a phantom limb of my past life, the one I’d long since shed like a snake its skin. Chapter 7 had been about the invitation, the moment the door creaked open, letting in a sliver of light I hadn’t even known I was missing. The Voice of Doubt, that old, shifty companion, was still very much alive and kicking. It liked to perch on my shoulder, a little shadow whispering venomous advice. *“Look at you,”* it’d hiss, its voice like dry leaves skittering across concrete. *“Trying to be something you’re not. The weight of past mistakes felt like a physical burden, pressing down on my chest, making each breath a conscious effort. Making amends wasn’t a neat, one-time event. It was a messy, ongoing excavation, digging through layers of regret and finding the roots of what had gone wrong. Some people I could call, stammering out apologies, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. Others… well, some wounds ran too deep, or the people who’d carried them were long gone, leaving only the echo of their pain. For those, I learned, the amends had to be paid forward, a silent vow to live differently, to be the light I’d once desperately searched for.
