The city lights, usually a comforting blanket of distant warmth, felt cold and alien tonight. Melissa stood by the window, her breath misting the glass, each exhale a silent prayer. The clock on the mantelpiece ticked with agonizing slowness, each second a hammer blow against the fragile hope she’d nurtured. John was supposed to be here. He’d promised. A simple dinner, a quiet evening, a reaffirmation of the fragile peace they’d been building. She’d dismissed it then, attributing it to the lingering fatigue of his recovery, the constant, unseen battle he waged within himself. Now, with the gnawing emptiness of his absence, that flicker felt like a premonition, a tiny crack in the dam that held back the floodwaters of his addiction.
