Chapter 7
The Siren's Call
The pull of addiction grows stronger. John finds himself drawn back to his vice, despite Melissa's love. A moment of weakness leads him astray, leaving him consumed by guilt and fear of losing her.
The scent of rain-soaked earth clung to the air, a familiar comfort that usually soothed John’s restless spirit. Tonight, however, it felt cloying, suffocating. He sat on the worn armchair in their living room, the soft glow of a single lamp casting long shadows that danced with his inner turmoil. Melissa was in the kitchen, the gentle clinking of dishes a counterpoint to the frantic drumming in his chest. He traced the intricate patterns on the armrest, his fingers seeking a solidity that eluded him. Dr. Reed’s words echoed, a calm, professional voice cutting through the rising panic. “Recognize the triggers, John. Understand the patterns. This is a battle, not a surrender.” He knew, intellectually, what he needed to do. He knew the steps, the strategies. But knowledge felt like a distant shore when the storm was raging all around him.
