Chapter 5
The Counselor's Wisdom
John reluctantly agrees to see Dr. Reed. She offers professional guidance, understanding his internal conflict. Melissa attends sessions, learning how best to support him, her resilience tested but her resolve firm.
The air in Dr. Reed’s office was thick with the scent of old paper and quiet contemplation. Sunlight, filtered through the blinds, painted stripes across the worn Persian rug, a silent testament to the many lives that had passed through this space. John sat stiffly on the edge of a plush armchair, his gaze fixed on a framed print of a serene landscape that seemed to mock his inner turmoil. Melissa, a comforting presence beside him, her hand a warm anchor on his thigh, offered a small, encouraging squeeze. He hadn’t wanted to come. The very idea of dissecting his pain, of laying bare the gnawing hunger that consumed him, felt like a betrayal of himself, and worse, a betrayal of Melissa. But her gentle persistence, the quiet strength in her eyes when she’d spoken of this possibility, had chipped away at his resistance.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, a woman whose silver hair was neatly pinned and whose eyes held a depth of understanding that immediately disarmed, offered a soft smile. "John, Melissa. Thank you for coming in. I know this isn't easy." Her voice was a low hum, soothing and professional. She gestured towards a delicate porcelain teacup on a side table. "Would you care for some tea? Herbal. Calming."
John shook his head, his throat tight. Melissa, ever observant, accepted a cup. "Thank you, Doctor. I think it would be nice." She poured a cup for John as well, placing it on the small table beside his chair. He didn't touch it.
