John watched Melissa across the worn oak table, her profile softened by the morning light filtering through the lace curtains. She was tracing the rim of her mug, her brow furrowed in thought, and a familiar ache, both sweet and sharp, tightened his chest. He remembered the terror he’d seen in her eyes during his worst moments, the flicker of doubt that had threatened to consume them both.
