The air in their small apartment, usually thick with the scent of Melissa’s baking and the faint, lingering perfume of their shared nights, now carried a different, acrid odor. It was the smell of despair, sharp and metallic, clinging to John like a second skin. He lay sprawled on the worn rug, the remnants of his latest descent scattered around him – an empty bottle, a crumpled foil, a faint shimmer of something that promised oblivion. Melissa stood in the doorway, her face a mask of something John had never seen before: not just hurt, but a profound, chilling emptiness. Her usual vibrant eyes, the color of a summer sky, were clouded, distant.

"John," her voice was a whisper, barely audible above the frantic thumping of his own heart. It was a sound stripped of all its warmth, all its familiar melody.

He tried to push himself up, his limbs heavy and uncooperative, his mind a thick fog. "Mel... baby, I..." The words caught in his throat, tasting like ash. He knew this look. He’d seen it flicker in her eyes before, when the shadows had begun to creep, but never this stark, this absolute. This was the aftermath of a storm, leaving behind only desolation.
