Chapter 7
Ink and Intrigue
Isodole begins her investigation, questioning those around the palace and meticulously recording her findings in a secret diary.
Ink stained Isodole’s fingers, a stark contrast to the pristine white of the parchment spread before her. The small table in her sparsely furnished chamber, a temporary reprieve from the echoing halls of the royal castle, was a battlefield of smudged ink and crumpled notes. Each word she committed to the page was a small act of rebellion, a silent scream against the injustice that had landed her, and by extension, her adoptive parents, in this gilded cage.
The polished oak of the table felt alien beneath her hands, so different from the rough-hewn wood of the humble cottage where she had grown up. Eighteen years. Eighteen years of love, of laughter, of a life she had believed was her own. Now, it felt like a dream, a cruel trick of the light, shattered by the blinding truth of her royal blood. And with that truth came the chilling accusation that her parents, the kind souls who had raised her, were criminals.
Her gaze drifted to the window, the frosted panes offering a distorted view of the snow-laden courtyard. Guards patrolled, their breaths pluming in the frigid air, their faces impassive. They were the eyes and ears of the Queen Mother, of Bianca, of a kingdom that had already condemned her family. But Isodole was not one to surrender to fate. Her heart, still beating with the fierce loyalty of a farmer’s daughter, refused to accept the narrative woven by the court. Her parents were innocent. She would prove it.
