Isodole arrives at the castle, facing her frail mother and her twin, Bianca. The reunion is fraught with tension and unspoken questions.
The biting wind whipped Isodole’s hair across her face as the carriage jolted along the icy path. Each bump sent a tremor through her, not entirely from the rough terrain. The guards flanking her, their faces impassive beneath their fur-lined hoods, were a constant reminder of her new reality. She was no longer simply Isodole of the Low Grounds, the girl who mended nets and knew the best fishing spots. She was the lost heir, the key to a kingdom teetering on the brink.
The castle loomed, a colossal edifice of white stone and glittering ice, its spires piercing the bruised, twilight sky. It was a stark contrast to the humble, snow-dusted cottages she knew. As the carriage drew to a halt before the massive, iron-banded doors, a knot of apprehension tightened in her stomach. This was it. The moment she had both yearned for and dreaded.
A contingent of stern-faced courtiers, draped in velvet and ermine, awaited her. Their eyes, sharp and appraising, swept over her simple, travel-worn clothes. Isodole smoothed down her tunic, acutely aware of her lack of finery. Beside them stood a woman, impossibly frail, swathed in layers of pale blue silk. Her face was a roadmap of sorrow, etched with lines that spoke of a grief Isodole could only begin to comprehend. This, she knew, was her mother. The Queen.
