A Change Within

The grand dining hall, usually a place of somber reflection or polite, stilted conversation, was abuzz with an unusual energy. Sunlight, a rare commodity in the perpetually frosted kingdom, streamed through the tall, arched windows, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. Isodole, still not entirely accustomed to the opulent surroundings of the royal palace, found herself seated at the long, polished table, the weight of her newfound identity a constant, heavy presence.

Across from her, Bianca, her twin sister, picked delicately at a piece of glazed fruit, her expression a mask of cool indifference. Bianca’s boyfriend, Riven, sat beside her, his gaze, however, often drifting towards Isodole. It was a silent dance they performed, a constant undercurrent of unspoken tension that vibrated between them.

“More honeyed almonds, Your Highness?” a server, a young woman with a perpetually nervous smile, inquired, holding out a silver platter piled high with the sweet, crunchy nuts.
