The heavy velvet curtains of Isodole’s chambers did little to block out the oppressive silence that had descended upon the castle since her mother’s passing. Each tick of the ornate grandfather clock in the hallway seemed to echo the emptiness within her, a constant reminder of the life she was now expected to lead, a life so vastly different from the one she had known mere weeks ago. The weight of the crown, still a distant prospect, felt heavier than any physical burden. She traced the intricate patterns on the silk coverlet of her bed, her mind a tangled mess of grief, confusion, and a burgeoning, dangerous affection.
The challenge for a suitor had been announced with all the fanfare befitting a royal decree, yet it felt like a cruel jest. How could she possibly choose a consort when her heart was already so irrevocably claimed? Every prince and lord presented to her was a pale imitation, their smiles too practiced, their words too hollow. They spoke of alliances and duty, of consolidating power, but none of them saw *her*. None of them saw the girl who had grown up in the low grounds, who still felt the bite of the wind on her cheeks and the calloused roughness of her hands from years of honest work.
A soft knock, barely audible above the thrumming of her own pulse, startled her. She hadn’t expected anyone. Her ladies-in-waiting had long since retired, leaving her to the solitude of her thoughts. Hesitantly, she called out, "Enter."
