The vast hall of the Winter Palace, usually a symphony of hushed footsteps and the crackle of hearth fires, now buzzed with a different kind of energy. It was a nervous, anticipatory hum, a stark contrast to the somber mood that had blanketed the kingdom since the Queen Mother’s passing. Isodole, no longer the wide-eyed girl from the low grounds, stood before a mirror, her reflection a stranger adorned in silks and jewels that felt both too heavy and not quite her own. Her coronation loomed, a mere fortnight away, and with it, the weight of a crown she had never imagined wearing.

“You look… regal, Your Highness,” Elara, her lady-in-waiting, murmured, her voice a soft rustle of silk. Elara had been assigned to her shortly after her arrival, a constant, gentle presence in the whirlwind of castle life.

Isodole offered a weak smile, her gaze fixed on the intricate embroidery of her gown. “Regal. Is that what this feels like, Elara? Like a beautifully crafted cage?”
