Chapter 6
The Journey Commences
Halima's discovery propels her onto a path of adventure to uncover the full truth of the 'lost branch'. With her innocent resilience, she faces the challenges ahead, unaware of the full extent of the family secrets and the siblings' animosity.
The afternoon sun dappled through the thick canopy of the ancient baobab tree, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow on the dry earth below. Halima, her small fingers tracing the rough, gnarled bark, felt a strange pull towards this particular spot. It was a place she often gravitated to, a quiet sanctuary away from the boisterous energy of the household. Today, however, there was a subtle difference, a hum in the air, a whisper of something more. Her gaze fell upon a loose section of bark, almost as if it had been deliberately placed there. Curiosity, a trait as natural to Halima as breathing, tugged at her. She wiggled her fingers beneath the bark, and with a surprising ease, it lifted away, revealing a dark cavity.
Inside, nestled amongst the dry roots and a scattering of fallen leaves, lay a small, carved wooden box. It was old, its surface smoothed by time and touch, adorned with intricate carvings that seemed to tell a story she couldn't quite decipher. Her heart gave a little leap. It felt like a secret, a treasure meant just for her. With trembling hands, she lifted the box from its hiding place. It was heavier than it looked, and the wood felt warm against her skin. For a moment, she simply held it, marveling at its quiet beauty. Then, with a gentle click, she opened it.
Inside, not gold or jewels, but a single, tightly rolled scroll tied with a faded, silken ribbon. Beside it lay a small, intricately carved wooden leaf, unlike any leaf she had ever seen. It was smooth and cool, with delicate veins etched into its surface. She picked up the leaf first, turning it over and over in her palm. It felt significant, important. Then, her fingers fumbled with the ribbon, her breath catching in her throat as she unrolled the scroll.
