The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace, felt a little too bright, a little too revealing, as Halima sat beneath the ancient mango tree. The smooth, cool bark pressed against her back, a comforting anchor in a day that had begun to feel strangely unmoored. Her fingers, still dusted with the dry earth from her discovery, traced the rough edges of the small, wooden box. It was no bigger than her two hands cupped together, intricately carved with patterns she didn’t quite recognize, yet they tugged at something deep within her, a faint echo of a forgotten song.

Inside, nestled amongst faded velvet, lay a single, tarnished silver locket. It was heart-shaped, its surface worn smooth by time and touch. With a gentle click, Halima eased it open. Two miniature portraits stared back at her. One, a man with kind eyes and a gentle smile, bore a striking resemblance to Father Ifeanyi, though younger, his hair darker. The other, a woman with a stern, yet strangely familiar, face, her lips set in a determined line, was a mystery. But it was the inscription, almost invisible in the dim light, etched onto the inside of the locket, that truly made her breath catch: *“To my dearest Elara, forever our lost branch.”*
