The silence, when it wasn’t broken by the chirping of birds or the rustle of leaves, was a heavy blanket, muffling the vibrant life that pulsed just beyond the pane.

He traced the condensation on the glass, a fleeting pattern that vanished as quickly as it appeared. Much like the faces, the moments, the screams that flickered at the edges of his vision. The lilac bush outside, a riot of deep purple against the pale morning sky, was beginning its annual performance. Its fragrance, usually a gentle invitation to spring, was a complex perfume today, laced with something deeper, something that tugged at the very roots of his being. It was the scent of his past, blooming with an almost violent insistence, a perfumed echo of the opera he carried within him.

His mother, Elena, entered the room with a tray of tea and a plate of toast, her movements soft, almost hesitant, as if afraid to disturb the fragile peace that seemed to cling to him. She placed the tray on a small table beside his armchair, her hand lingering for a moment on his shoulder. Her touch was a familiar comfort, a warm anchor in the swirling currents of his mind, yet even it couldn't quite penetrate the fog.
