The air, thick with the heady perfume of lilacs, pressed in on Elias like a physical weight. Each inhale was a gamble, a surrender to the inevitable tide of memory. He’d woken with the sun painting streaks of gold across his small room, a promise of a new day that felt utterly hollow.
