The morning air, usually a crisp invitation to the day, felt thick and heavy to Elias, like a velvet curtain draped over his senses. He stirred in his cot, the rough wool scratching against his skin, a familiar discomfort that was, for once, grounding. Sunlight, pale and hesitant, filtered through the grimy windowpane, painting stripes across the wooden floor. It was a new day, the kind that should have felt full of promise, but for Elias, it was just another expanse of time to navigate.

He sat up, his limbs stiff, a dull ache settling in his bones. The world outside was a riot of green, a symphony of rustling leaves and chirping birds. It was beautiful, undeniably so, but the beauty felt like a foreign language, a dialect he could no longer speak fluently. It was too bright, too loud, too… alive. It was the sweet perfume of memory, yes, but it was also the overture to the operatic agony that had become his constant companion. He closed his eyes, and the familiar crescendo began. The gentle sway of the lilac branches in the breeze transformed into the desperate lurch of a grenade. The chirping of birds became the frantic cries of wounded men. The air, heavy with the scent of blossoms, thickened with the acrid smoke of gunpowder.
