The hum of focused conversation filled the small group work area, a sound that still felt a little strange to my ears. It wasn’t the loud, boisterous chatter of the playground, or the overwhelming roar of the cafeteria. This was different. This was a symphony of shared minds, each instrument playing its part, and for the first time, I didn’t feel like a discordant note. Ms. Claude fore’s project, the one that had initially sent a tremor of anxiety through me, was actually… working.
Shion, usually the one bouncing with energy, was hunched over a large piece of chart paper, his brow furrowed in concentration as he sketched out a rough diagram. Ava, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm, was meticulously organizing a pile of colorful construction paper, her fingers moving with a practiced grace. And me? I was there too, perched on the edge of my seat, my sketchbook open, my pencil poised.
After that first breakthrough, after my sketch had surprised them, something had shifted. It was like a tiny crack had appeared in the wall I’d built around myself, letting in a sliver of light. Ava had been the first to truly see it. “Rianaelle, that’s brilliant!” she’d exclaimed, her voice genuinely delighted. “It’s so simple, but it solves everything!” Shion, initially taken aback, had nodded slowly, a flicker of admiration in his eyes. “Yeah, I didn’t even think of that. You’re right, that’s the smartest way to do it.”
