The last vestiges of sunlight bled across the savannah, painting the acacia trees in hues of fiery orange and soft rose. Salect’s muscles, coiled with anticipation, finally unfurled. He descended the rough bark of his sanctuary, a silent blur of spotted gold against the deepening shadows. Below, a familiar, sinewy form emerged from the rustling grass – Samyer, his brother, his shadow, his lifelong hunting partner. They had grown up together, two sleek young leopards honing their skills in tandem, their lives a symphony of shared kills and mutual protection. Tonight, the air thrummed with a primal urgency, a final dance before the true darkness claimed the land. Salect’s gaze, sharp and unwavering, locked onto Samyer’s. A silent understanding passed between them.

With a fluid grace that belied the gnawing hunger in his belly, Salect melted into the tall savanna grass. His senses, amplified by the encroaching twilight, strained for the faintest scent, the slightest tremor. Then, he saw it. A lone impala, grazing near a clump of thorny bushes, its head down, oblivious. Salect’s body became a spring, coiling tighter and tighter. He crept forward, each paw placement measured, deliberate. The distance vanished in a breathtaking burst of speed. He launched himself, a golden projectile, landing with a thud that silenced the impala’s startled bleat. The struggle was brief, fierce, and ultimately successful. With a powerful heave, Salect began to drag his prize towards Samyer, who waited with a rumbling purr of approval. They feasted together, the primal act of sustenance a brief respite from the ever-present tension. As the last of the impala’s flesh was consumed, Salect felt the familiar pull of the trees, the instinct to seek higher ground. He nudged Samyer with his head, a silent farewell for now, and then, with practiced ease, he scaled the rough sawing once more, settling onto a sturdy branch. His gaze drifted to the west, where the sun was a molten disc, its final rays a poignant reminder of the day’s end. Below, the savannah was a tapestry of shifting light and shadow, and somewhere in that darkening expanse, Lyla was keeping watch. A faint mewling sound reached his ears, barely audible above the rustling leaves. He knew that sound. Jessica, his new daughter, Leo’s little sister, was safe, nestled close to her mother. The golden hour had passed. The night was no longer a distant threat, but a tangible presence, and Salect, from his leafy perch, was ready to face it.
