Chapter 20
Until the Dawn
The moon rises, illuminating the savannah. Salect remains vigilant, his family near. The night is long, and survival depends on their combined strength and the fading light of day.
The afternoon sun, once a blazing orb, now softened into a diffused glow, casting long, ethereal shadows across the savannah. The air thrummed with the restless energy of predators near their peak hunting hours, a symphony of growls and snaps that echoed the constant dance of survival. Yet, in a pocket of dappled shade, Salect, the leopard, found a moment’s respite. His powerful muscles, coiled and ready, relaxed just enough to allow a deep, steady breath. Their species were born rivals, destined to vie for the same dwindling resources, yet a peculiar bond had formed between these two. Kingwol’s gaze, intelligent and ever-watchful, held no predatory glint when it fell upon Salect. It was a gaze of shared understanding, of mutual respect forged in the crucible of the savannah.
“The light fades, Salect,” Kingwol’s voice was a low purr, a sound that seldom carried far, a testament to his own stealth. “Lyla waits.”
