A Betrayal Unveiled
The air in the stables, usually thick with the comforting scent of hay and horse, now held a brittle tension. Eleanor, her heart a frantic bird against her ribs, reread the smudged ink of the letter. It spoke of betrayal, of a pact broken, and a name that made her stomach clench: Harrington. Alistair Harrington. The man who had so charmingly escorted her at the Hunt Ball, whose eyes had held a glint of something more than polite admiration, was somehow tied to her family’s plight, to the very reason the Blackwood estate teetered on the edge of ruin.
Buster, sensing her distress, nudged her hand with his wet nose, his tail giving a tentative thump against the straw. Eleanor buried her face in his soft fur, drawing strength from his unwavering presence. “Oh, Buster,” she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. “What does it all mean?”
She looked at Thunder, his magnificent head resting over the stable door, his large, dark eyes watching her with an almost human understanding. He was her solace, her escape, but even he couldn’t outrun the shadows that now crept into her sanctuary. The letter, tucked into her riding skirt pocket, felt like a lead weight, pulling her down into a world of adult complexities she wasn’t sure she was ready for.
