Chapter 4
A Chance Encounter by the River
The river, a ribbon of silver under the pale spring sky, wound its way through the emerald fields, a familiar and comforting sight to Eleanor. It was here, by its gentle murmur, that she often sought solace, her loyal Buster trotting faithfully at her heels, his tail a blur of happy anticipation. Today, however, her thoughts were far from the usual playful chase after a thrown stick. The mysterious letter, tucked safely in her pocket, felt like a heavy stone, its cryptic words echoing in her mind. "The Derby holds more than just glory for the Vance name," it had read, and the unsettling unease it had sparked had not yet subsided.

Mr. Harrington, a man whose charm was as polished as his boots, had been a frequent, and rather unwelcome, visitor of late, his questions about the upcoming race and her family's history feeling more like an interrogation than polite conversation.
Lost in her musings, Eleanor didn't hear the approaching footsteps until a voice, warm and tinged with a gentle Irish lilt, startled her. "Lovely day for a walk, Miss Eleanor."
