The scent of aged paper and forgotten dust clung to the air in Professor Thorne’s study, a familiar comfort to Anya that now felt tinged with a new, somber weight. Sunlight, fractured by the leaded panes of the tall window, painted shifting mosaics across the worn Persian rug. Professor Thorne sat behind his imposing oak desk, his usually twinkling eyes now clouded with a profound melancholy. He had summoned Anya, not for a shared puzzle or a historical anecdote, but for a confession.

“Anya,” he began, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. He clasped his hands on the desk, his knuckles white. “There are things from my past that I have kept… buried. But now, with what you have found, with the Obsidian Hand stirring, I can no longer afford such secrets.”

Anya settled into the worn leather armchair opposite him, her heart thrumming with a mixture of apprehension and a burgeoning understanding. She had sensed a shadow in his past, a flicker of regret in his eyes when certain historical periods or secretive societies were mentioned.
