The air in the attic had grown thick, not just with dust motes dancing in the slivers of light, but with a palpable tension that coiled around Elara like a serpent. Silas Thorne’s shadow had stretched from the edges of the old house and now pressed in, suffocating. His questions, once casual inquiries about dusty heirlooms, had sharpened into an insistent prod, a relentless digging for something he clearly believed was hidden within these walls. He’d visited twice more since Elara’s last frantic scramble through her great-aunt Maeve’s letters, each time his eyes, like polished obsidian, scanning the room with an unnerving intensity. “*The promise is not a burden, Elara, but a shield,*” it read. “*They seek the Heartstone, not for its beauty, but for the silence it commands. To speak its name aloud is to invite the storm. The Keeper, our pot, holds the key to its resting place, but only when the Candle of Binding burns its last. Do not let the Thorne’s blood taint its power. Protect it as you would your own breath. The pact is sealed with sacrifice, and the guardians are many.*”
